I woke up. I had trouble getting my eyes open. I was hot, so hot and this horrible smell made me want to gag. When I opened my eyes, I was startled by the fact I was laying next to a dead camel. I had seen Camels on tv and in magazines but not in real life. I must be dreaming. The last thing I remember was Sam. Ok lets set the book straight his name is Scott. Scott was trying to warm up to me and have sex and I felt so bad I couldn’t, I told him I was feeling really bad. Maybe I have high temperature. Maybe that is what is wrong with me. I am delirious. I opened my eyes again and this time I was awake. The dead camel was so gross. I climbed to my feet sunk in this hot sand. I tried to get away from it. I turned around to get my bearings when I saw a guy. A soldier, 8 to 12 feet from the camel, laying face up in the sand. I tried to get to him. Finnally made it to him and dropped to my knees next to him to see if he was alive. I put my hand on his chest and could feel his heart beating. I thought, ‘Water, I have to get him water.’ His lips were cracked. I found a water container on the back of my belt. I put some water on his lips and then a little in his mouth. He swallowed. I kept slowly putting water in his mouth and he start swallowing. Gulping down as much as he could, until he was drinking it normally. I took a scarf from his neck and put some water on it. Put it on his eyes and face. He was coming around, trying to open his eyes. He put his dry hands on the container and tried to drink it faster but I told him he needed to drink it really slowly. The water was almost gone. With the water in his hands, I stood up to get my bearings. Where was I? This was not a dream. There was a top to the little hill we were on about 15 feet up. I start climbing to the top of the hill. The sand was so hot and it seeped into my shoes and burned.
At the top of the hill, I looked down the other side and there laid 12 to 15 or more bodies. Some facing up, some facing down. Soldiers, just like this one. I was shocked. What happened? Why are they here? Why am I here?
I jumped to the house. Rummaged through the fridge looking for a jug of water, the only thing was milk. I grabbed the milk out and shut the fridge door. Mark was sitting at the table with Lisa. Lisa was asking Mark if he sent me somewhere and Mark was telling her, ‘No.’ I didn’t really notice.
I turned to Lisa who was sitting at the table and said, “Do we have any jugs of water?” She didn’t think so. Scott came in and looked at me holding the milk. I ask him, “Do you have a beacon?” He didn’t. I saw Margret talking in a cell phone and thought what is she doing here. Put the milk on the table when up to Margret and grabbed the phone out of her hand. She yelled, “Give me that.” She started grabbing for the phone. I took my left hand and placed it around her neck to hold her at bay. Turned to Lisa and said, “Who’s phone is this?” She replied, “Marcy’s.” I said, “Can you track it anywhere in the world?” She returned, “Usually.” I pushed Margret back and she fell on her butt. I grabbed the milk and pleaded with Lisa to do her very, very best. I then jumped back. I went to the first soldier I could reach on the other side of the hill and did the same that I had done with the water. At first, I thought maybe he was dead but as I kept putting milk on his lips he started responding. I then started doing it with the guy next to him. I looked up and the first guy was trying to crawl over the hill. The two guys that I was in between had almost finished the milk. I put the phone in one guy’s hand and said, ” Hold on to this.” I took the container and walked up to the guy crawling. Put my hand around his waist to stand him up. Got his arm over the back of my shoulders and jumped. We landed right next to Lisa almost falling on her. She was on a cell phone talking to someone. Mark was on one side of the table. I looked at him, up and down. It had been at least a year since I saw him last. I handed him the milk container. Could you fill this up for me, please? Scott was taking the guy from me. I frantically said, “Call 911 and tell them you have a person with heat exhaustion.” Mark handed me the water filled jug. I jumped. I gave more water to the first two. One was able to take the water jug. Took the other one around the waist to stand him up, put his arm around my neck and we jumped. Gave that one to Scott who took him in the living room where the paramedics were coming in the front door.
I jumped back to the guy trying to give water to another guy. I started to help, when a helicopter came overhead and then another. I grabbed the guy with the water around his waist. Set the water down and jumped. Landed next to Lisa again. Lisa looked at me and yelled, “Scott.” Scott came and took the last guy to the livingroom. I went to the kitchen sink. Washed my face with my hand and drank a lot of water. Wiped my face and hands off with my arm and shirt. I struggled to get to the bedroom. I fell on the bed and passed out. I was that so tired.
They took the three guys to the hospital. Scott went into the kitchen where Lisa and Mark were sitting. They could see my feet sticking off the bed. Scott said, “She didn’t clean up before she laid down.” Lisa looked at him and said, “What? She didn’t lay down, she passed out” He looked at her. Lisa said, “Did you send her there?” He responded, “Yes, I didn’t know what else to do. No one had heard from them for days.” Lisa looked at him, thinking, then said, “Then go in there take her shoes off, put her in bed and make sure she is ok. When she gets up she needs some good food. Protein, maybe a steak, and vitamins would most likely help. The other day she looked in the fridge and saw that steak in there and ask me if anyone would be upset if she ate it. I asked her if she wanted me the cook it and she said ‘No’. That she wanted protein so bad she could eat it raw. You sent her there while you knew she was sick, so go now and take care of her.”
He went into the bedroom, took my tennis shoes and socks off trying not to spill the sand. My ankles were all red and burnt from the sand. He took a wet wash rag for the bathroom and carefully wiped my ankles to clean the burns. He moved me around onto the bed where he could cover me up with the covers. He put his hand on my forehead to check for a temperature. I was cool. He picked up my shoes and socks taking them into the kitchen. He threw my socks away in the garbage and dumped the sand out of my shoes. He looks at Lisa and said, “She is going to need new shoes.” He threw those in the garbage with the socks and shut the cabinet door. He turned to Lisa and Mark and said, “I am going to the store. I need to get burn salve, new shoes, meat, and lots of vegetables for tonight.” As he was leaving the room Mark glared at him with hate and jealousy.
