Who Jumped the Gun?

Matthew was in the end of an alley. He was looking across the street and up a little to a building that a man was being held in that Matthew came for. Matthew and his team had been called to get this man out immediately. They paid a lot of money up front to Matthew because no one else said they could do it. They knew Matthew’s record and was sure he was the one. Matthew was going to get him out and then his team was going to get both of them out. He looked and didn’t see anyone on the street. Just when he was going to move a rocket hit the building on the other side of the street. He pressed up hard against the wall he was standing next to. Since he wasn’t directly across from the building and a car was parked almost in front of him he was covered from everything that was flying through the air. It stopped and then other one hit the building up from that building. Matthew saw a manhole cover behind the car. He ran to the drivers side of the car, reached in the broken window opening the trunk and put the car in neutral. Ran back to the trunk and pulled out a crowbar. He opened the manhole with the crowbar. Crawled in. Reached up, pulled the car over the hole and then ducked his head inside. More and more explosions went off. As long as they didn’t hit the car he would be ok. He couldn’t believe how many missiles were coming down. After a few minutes he decided to poke his head out of the hole under the car and look around. When he looked around sitting next to the car was a baby girl crying. He looked all over from under the car and he couldn’t see any people. Most buildings were gone. The build next to the car looked like it was only half there. He raised up as far as he could and with both hands grabbed the baby. He then ducked back into then hole just as the car came down on the hole. This made it impossible to leave the way he came in. With the baby in one arm he climbed down to the bottom of the ladder and decided he needed to get out of there. After running down the sewer a few minutes he stopped to see if his phone worked. He had no service. He knew he had to get out of there right away because his team would be waiting for him. He held the crying baby up and looked at her. He could see no damage. She didn’t look hurt. She must be crying because she was scared of the noise. He looked her all over and thought she must be 4 to 5 months old. Very small, skinny with blond hair and blue eyes. He kissed her and said, “Don’t worry we are going to find your mother. He took this shirt ends and tied the end together under the last button. Took his belt out of his pants and put it on just above the tie. Put the baby inside his shirt. This would give him both hands free if needed. He still held the baby with his left hand as he ran down the sewer. He ran for a good 45 minutes to an hour when he came to a dead end. He decide to go back a little ways to another tunnel he passed. He did a slow but steady trot to the tunnel and turned into that one. He continued that way for another hour and then stopped to a walk and check his phone. Still no phone service and he hadn’t found a way out. He thought there has to be an end because the sewage had to go some where. He beefed it up again to a good running trot. The baby had quit crying and was resting peacefully. After running again for what seemed like an hour and a half he came to the end of the tunnel running into a small river. He stepped out of the tunnel into the stream up to his knees and waded to the bank. There was nothing around. He had no idea where he was because he wasn’t sure which direction he had gone. He took out his phone and still no service so he headed down the bank in the direction he though might be away from the town.

Back at the house in the living room on the news channel they were talking about a bombing on a town that turkey done. They showed pictures of the town and there was nothing left. They also said there was no survivors. No adults or children. I looked up and saw there was nothing left of the town. No buildings or anything you could recognize. I thought how terrible. Some the other people in living room where thinking the same thing.

Matthew looked at his phone again and still nothing. It was starting to get dark. It must have been four hours since he was going to go in that building. He decided to keep walking because he was sure sooner or later he would come across something or someone. After it got dark he could see the see the stars. The sky was so clear and the stars were so beautiful. He could see the north star and decided to follow it. He took his phone out and tried again. He was able to get a call through. Steve answered, “Matt are you ok?” Matthew said, “Yes but I don’t know where I am. Ask Gary to track my phone, find me and come get me out of here.” He heard Gary say, “hang on I’ll find him.” Just as Matthew heard Gary say I found him, his phone went dead. He sat down and waited. He decide to stay right there. It was cold so he put his left arm around the baby. Put his right hand in his shirt under her chin so he could see her face. Matthew said, “Are you ok?” She opened her big blue eyes. She was doing ok. He was just worried because she had been so quite for so long. After what seem like a half an hour he decided to get up and walk around. It was cold and maybe moving around would warm him up. He walked back and forth. He started talking to the baby. Matthew said, “What is your name?” He then started naming names to see if if she would respond. He must of said a hundred name and no response. He looked at her to see if she was awake. She was awake and he thought she was listening. He tried more names and when he said Hunter and the baby looked up. Matthew said, “Is your name Hunter?” The baby looked up. Matthew said, “What kind of test could I do to figure out if your name is Hunter or you just like the name Hunter? Walking back and forth trying to think of a test when all of a sudden he saw a light. He stopped and watched. It was a helicopter and it was getting closer. He looked in his pocket for his flashlight. He pulled it out, turned it on and started waving it in the direction of the light. They saw it and came right to him. They landed and he got in. Steve shut the door and said, Boy are we glad to see you.” Matthew responded, “The same here.” Steve said, “We were told there were no survivors in the whole town. The news is showing pictures that there is nothing left. Not one standing building and not a sole alive. We thought you were dead. He showed Matthew several pictures and the place was almost flat.” Matthew said, ” If I had gone 5 minutes earlier I would be gone. Are you sure there is no one alive?” Steve said, “Yes, several groups have checked it out.” Matthew said, “Give me your phone.” Steve took it out of his pocket and handed it to Matthew. Matthew called Gary. When Gary answered Matthew said, “Gary, this is Matthew.” Gary responded, ” Oh my god you made it.” Matthew said, “Thanks for finding me. I want you to get me a birth cert right now. Listen carefully. Put female child 4 and 1/2 months old. You figure out the birthday. Born 4 and 1/2 months ago. Put name Elizabeth Hunter and my last name. Parents Me and Angel. Put the baby girl was born at our compound. Ok, Can you do that? Gary said, “No problem it will not take me long. You are the father?” Matthew said, “Yes, and Angel is the mother. I need that yesterday. ASAP. Got it ? It has to be good and has to pass mustard. Call me when you get it.” Gary said, “No problem I’m on it.” Matthew hung up and gave Steve back his phone and said, “I need a blanket and water.” Steve gave him bottle water and a blanket. Matthew took the baby out of his shirt. Wrapped her in the blanket and holding her gave her some water. He was able to get some down her. He also drank the water. They were both very thirsty. Steve said, “who is that?” Matthew replied, “That is my new baby and no one is to know where she came from.” Matthew told Steve the whole story and that if he hadn’t grabbed her when he did she would be a goner. He also told him he wanted to kill those guys who sent him there. If he had gone in just 5 minutes earlier he would be under that pile. He told everyone in the helicopter no one was to breath a word of this. I am the father and that’s it. Her name is Elizabeth Hunter after my mother. Everyone agreed. They all said they were just glad he made it. Steve told him that must be the reason he smells so bad. Running through a sewer for hours. Matthew borrowed Steve’s phone again. This time he called Amy and told her to get a small baby bed, diapers, a baby bottle and other baby things sent to his room right now that he was almost back and needed them. Amy just said OK. He leaned back in his chair with his seat belt on and shut his eyes to rested. He couldn’t believe what he went through and this poor child had lost its parents or whole family in a matter of minutes. It was a long time before they got to an airport. They all got in a nice plane and headed home. Matthew had a nice meal on the plane and tried to feed the baby milk and jell-o. The baby really liked everything he tried to feed her. Matthew told her she looked too skinny and he was going to have to get some meat on those bones. He then sat back in his chair again holding the child covered in a blanket and tried to get some shut eye. When they landed Steve drove everyone back to the compound. They joked with Matthew about how bad he smelled. Matthew didn’t care he was just glad to be alive and they were also.

When Matthew got back Gary had all the documents ready. Everything looked really good. He went to the house upstairs and in his room with the baby. I was in bed but not asleep. I had been wondering why Matthew was having these baby things delivered to the room. When he came in I smiled at him and he said, ” I have to get a shower. Angel could you come in the bathroom and help me?” I followed him in the bathroom and notice he smelled really bad right away. He held the baby in one arm while taking his clothes off. Turned on the shower, checked the temperature, dropped the blanket the baby was in and took her clothes off. My eyes got really big when I saw the baby. All these questions showed up in my head. Where did the baby come from and why did he have it? I didn’t say anything. I thought he will tell me when he is ready. He then got in the shower and washed the baby first. The baby seem to really like it. Afterward he handed the baby out to me he asked if Amy had gone back to her room. She had. He took a shower and came out. I had dried the baby off. She was so cute. After Matthew dried off he wrapped a towel around himself and came out looking for the baby bottle. I showed him the one that they brought and it was still warm. He sat me in the chair, wrapped the baby in a baby banket, handed her to me and the bottle. I gave the bottle to her and she drank that so fast I wondered if that was good for her to drink it so fast. I mean she sucked that down in record time. I asked Matthew what her name was. Matthew showed me her birth certificate with his mother’s name and our names. He said her name is Hunter. He said he went in this town and everyone was dead. That he saw her and they started bombing the buildings so I grabbed her and ran. He said no one is to know she is not ours because she lost her parents and if he turned her over to the government he doesn’t know what would happen to her. So he said, “How do you feel like being a mom early?” I smiled at him and replied, “Sounds good.” I was happy he was concerned with what would happen to the child and having a sister for Wyatt sounded great. I said, “Wyatt and Hunter. Wow, I was surprised when the doctor told me I was pregnant but two. I don’t know if I will be able to sleep tonight.” He told me he thought she was 4 and 1/2 months. That it was only a guess so that is why Gary picked the birthday based on that. Matthew took the small baby bed to his side of the bed. He carefully took the sleeping child from me and put her in the crib. We got in bed. Matthew pulled me over to him and with my head on his chest went to sleep. About thirty minutes later Hunter started crying. I moved and Matthew got up. Picked up the child and holding her asked what’s the problem was. After a few minutes she fell back asleep in his arms. He again carefully put her back in her bed and we went back to sleep. I think it was an hour later she started crying again. Matthew again got up picked up the child and comforted her. When she would fall asleep he would try and put her in her bed but she would start crying. He finally got back in bad, put her on his chest where my head normally goes on the inside of the bed between us. After a few minutes she fell asleep. Matthew whispered I don’t think she will sleep in her bed tonight. She was sound asleep. I smiled at him and whispered I need to turn on my left side so the baby is not on my Blatter. I whispered night, night and turned over with my back to them and went to sleep. I woke at four to go the bathroom. Slipping out of bed quietly it looked like both dad and baby were doing well. Afterward I quietly slipped back into bed. At 7:30 Matthew was on his phone which he had been charging on his night stand and was ordering breakfast to be set to the room and a baby bottle. The baby was awake but was happy where she was. Matthew called Amy and told her we were going to spend the day together and he would call if he needed her. He called his mom and told her he would most likely be spending his day in his room and when she had time could she come by. He had something important to talk to her about. She asked if everything was ok and was anyone sick. Matthew explained we just want to spend some time together. We are fine. She said she would come buy after breakfast.
