Conner comes to lunch. When we got seated for lunch, on Mom’s right was a place setting that no one was sitting at. Everyone else had been moved down one. After a few minutes went by one of Carlson’s guards showed up with a guest. The guest came in and it was a really good looking man with a white cowboy hat. I mean really good looking. He reminded me of Matthew. When Matthew left he was wearing his tight blue jeans. A shirt with the sleeves rolled up showing his really nice looking muscles. He had that black cowboy hat and just looked fabulous. This guy Conner was around the same age as Matthew. He went to high school with Matthew many years ago. He looked good and was physical fit like Matthew. It made my heart sink. I really missed Matthew at this time. I looked at Daniela with her mouth open and thought she is going to get in big trouble if she doesn’t stop that. He came down to where Mom was sitting. He took his hat off to greet her. He took her right hand and kissed it. He said, your as beautiful as the day I left. Mom smiled really big and said, thankyou. Conner sat down at the empty seat next to Mom. Mom said to everyone, this is Conner. He lived here many years ago. Scott looked at Conner as he was sitting down. Scott said, why did you leave? Conner looked at Scott remembering him. Conner said, I fell in love and my wife wanted to live somewhere else. Scott said, How is your wife? Conner said, she died at the beginning of the year. A drunk driver ran into her. Mom said, I am sorry to hear that. How are your boys? Conner said, good. They are with my mother-in-law and are doing good in school. I came here to work with Carlson on Matthew’s project next door. Mom said, it is so great to see you. Maybe some day you can bring the boys to visit. Conner said, maybe next summer. Conner asked, Mom how she was doing? Mom said, it has been hard losing Matthew. He said, ya I know. He saved my ass twice. I keep remembering those times and many others. He looked at me and said, this must be the beautiful Angel that Matthew was always taking to me about? I said, thankyou. I don’t feel so beautiful right now because I am so pregnant. Conner said, how far along are you? Conner and Scott kept giving each other the evil eye. I said, I am due in January. Not much longer to go. Conner said, do you know if it is a girl or boy. I said, a girl and a boy. Twins. Conner said, that’s wonderful. Matthew would have been very happy. I said, I know. I was all excited to tell him when I found out I was pregnant but never got the chance. Conner said, I will always miss Matthew he was a great guy. When he went to pick you up and he found you, you were very sick. I helped him find a doctor to treat you and charter a plane to get you there. He would call me about every 30 minutes and say the doctor didn’t know if you would make it. Matthew said if he had waited another couple of days you would have been dead when he arrived. The doctor said, Matthew drove every one nuts because he paced the floor almost continuously the whole three weeks you were in the hospital. And when the doctor said they had done everything they could for you, he thought you were going to die. They sent him home with lots of pills and said only time will tell. He spent another 3 weeks hoping one day you would get better and you did. When you woke up, he was so happy on the phone that you were going to make it. I was almost in tears thinking about Matthew. I said, the first couple of weeks I treated him so terrible. He was trying so hard to show me how much he cared. He would say someday I am going back and kill those people for treating you so bad. He was so happy when he asked me to marry him and I said, yes. Conner said, he called me and was keeping me up late at night saying what if she says no? I couldn’t get anything done. I was always answering the phone. He was like a teenage in love. He hadn’t loved anyone before and didn’t know what to say or do. He completely changed when he met you. He was a real son of a bitch before he met you. But, after he picked you up, he turned into a really nice guy. Hunter turned to Scott and said, daddy, daddy. She wanted a strawberry on his plate. Conner heard her and said to Scott, Are these your children? Scott said, no. They are Matthews. Conner felt hate and contempt for Scott. He said, then why are they calling you daddy? Scott said, I asked Angel to marry me. Conner said, if you check Matthew’s will, Angel can not remarry unless the person is listed in the will. Scott said, that can’t be true. She is not a piece of property. Conner said, it is true. In fact Matthew changed his will after I lost my wife and it says that I am the only one she could remarry. Scott said, that’s fucked up. I love her and I want to marry her. I am not going to just give her to you. Conner said, she is not yours to give to anyone. Scott said, Is that why you came? To collect anything left to you in the will? Scott looked a Mom and said, did you know about this? Mom said, yes but I thought Carlson would help you find away around it. Conner said, Matthew hired you to protect her not to victimize her. Scott said, I didn’t do any such think. Conner said, you preyed on her. She was distraught, in shock and pregnant. She is still mourning her husband even now. You can see it in her eyes. It took me months to get over my wife, with the help of my two boys, my mother-in-law and a lot of therapy. Angel has widow’s brain and you took advance of that. You thought this is your chance to move in, get Matthew’s wife and maybe this house. Now she has to get over Matthew and what you have done to her. Scott wanted to kill Conner. Conner gave Scott that look back. Conner was thinking just go for it. I had tears running down my face because I did still miss Matthew. I kept remembering when he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I remembered the day he left. He had Hunter on his back and was doing exercises in the morning. She was having a great time. Scott stood up and said, I am not going to sit here and listen to this bull shit. I will be in my room if anyone needs me. After he left Conner turned to Mom and said, he always did run away from messes he made. Tears were running down my cheeks. The room was spinning, a cloud came over me. I couldn’t hear anything but my own thoughts. I couldn’t move. After Scott left, Amy and Cindy came around the table to take care of the kids. Conner said to me, I am sorry I made you cry but Scott should not be taking advance of your bad situation. I couldn’t say anything. I wasn’t sure what he said. I just looked at him and felt like I was going to pass out. I touched Amy’s shirt. I whispered I needed to go lay down. Could you help me to Mom’s room? Mom had Conner push my wheel chair and Mom lead us to her room. They helped me out of the chair and into bed. Conner said, You are big. Are you sure it is going to be until January. I just shook my head and said, ya. Mom handed me a box tissue. She said, if you need anything I will be in the other room. I said, thankyou. I fell asleep right away. They went back to the dinning table. When the kids were done. Cindy and Amy took the kids to the family room to play with toys. Conner and Mom sat at the table for a long time just drinking coffee and talking. Mom put Conner in the first room at the top of the stairs. When he came out of his room he could see Scott ‘s room, Paul’s room and outside through the large windows.
At dinner time Mom came in and said I need to get up for dinner. I told her I was so tired and just needed to sleep awhile longer. Daniela came in with my tray of food and sat it by the bed. She woke me and told me I needed to eat. I thought she was Matthew. I said, Matthew. I am just not hungry right now. She said, I will go eat and come back to see if you need some help. I said, thankyou Daniela. You have always been such a good friend to me. I fell back asleep. Daniela came back and I was still asleep. Daniela tried to wake me up but I could only wake up enough to say What? and fall back asleep. Daniela went and told Mom she needed to send a nurse. The nurse came and checked me out and told Mom since I wasn’t eating she was putting me in the hospital. They put me on a stretcher with wheels. As they crossed the lobby Conner opened the front door. As he was going back to where Mom was, Scott came out of his room up to Conner. Conner put his hands in his pockets with his thumbs out in order to have self control. Scott looked at him and said, If she looses those babies I am going to skin you alive and enjoy it. Conner said, That is not the first time I have been told that and continued walking.
An hour or two later Scott went to the hospital to check on me. The nurse said she was fine and was in room A27 if he wanted to check on her. He went in and I was asleep. Scott took my hand and an kissed it. I opened my eyes and smiled. Scott said, how are you doing? I said, ok. I am fine. Scott said, if you need anything just let me know. I will be here. I said, you are so sweet. My eyes closed and I fell back asleep. Scott looked at the bags hung, the monitors and thought she is doing ok. He sat in a chair and shut his eyes. He wanted to ask the doctor in the morning how things were going. He dozed off thinking the monitors would alarm if anything went wrong. He would wake up every hour or so and check on me.
